After a morning yak we visited Ninety Six National Historic site. Historians believe the the towns name, 96, was used because it is located along a major Cherokee indian path that extended from the ocean to the mountains and the settlement was 96 miles from Keowee, a major Cherokee village. Two other major roads converged at 96 in the 1700s so it was an important center of commerce. The first southern land battle of the Revolutionary War was fought here in 1775. The battle was fought between Loyalists and Patriots. All of them were born here, they had a different view of who should be in charge. The very first southern fatality of the revolutionary war occured during this battle. The loyalists lost the battle. There was another battle here in 1781. The berms and trenches that were part of the second battle are still evident and the park has a well marked interpretive trail that meanders through them. The Loyalists won the second battle. We move tomorrow.
