Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument

This place was the only thing on our agenda today. We drove to the monument on Hwy 15. It is part of the "Trail of the mountain spirits national scenic byway". The drive was exceptionally cool. The road was narrow, steep, and curvy through thick pine forest. It took 2 hours. We had a picnic at the trail head and hiked up to the ruins as the weather was starting to look iffy. There are 6 caves along one wall with dwellings in each one. There was a retired couple giving us information at the ruins. It started raining a little, while we were there, so the trail was closed. We had an hour to pick the brains of the volunteer couple, mostly about long term RV living. We took a different route home and had leftovers for dinner. Tomorrow is a visit to "city of rocks state park".
